Buying clothes online can seem difficult because you can't try them on to check your size! But with some simple body measurements and a size chart, you can shop online with confidence. Just follow our handy guide to learn how to measure your body like a tailor, then compare your body measurements to the brand's size chart to find your size.

What Do You Need?

To measure, you'll need some tailor's tape measure and a helping hand, as it's much easier with an extra pair of hands. Simple tailor's tape can be purchased on Amazon for cheap. Your helper should be someone you trust and don't feel shy around because they might see you in your underwear.

If you don't have tailor's tape, a piece of string or ribbon can be used as a workaround. Wrap the string around the body part you want to measure, mark it with a marker, then put it in place and measure with a ruler or ruler. This won't be as precise as tailor's tape, but it will get the job done in a pinch.

General Tips

Pull the tape around the body part tightly enough to keep it straight and level, but not so tight that it compresses the skin. For maximum accuracy, you're looking for that happy middle between tight and loose.

Take measurements on bare skin, not clothing.

Make sure to use the correct units.

How to Measure Women's Clothing?

The most common measurements for women's clothing are bust, waist, hip, and inseam measurements. Sometimes you'll also need to measure your "middle back sleeve" or "torso" measurements. We'll take these in turn.

Bust

To measure a woman's breasts, wrap the tape measure around her armpits, wrapping her body completely around her shoulder plates and the fullest part of her breasts. For best results, she should wear an unpadded bra with her arms relaxed at her sides. Make sure not to gather the tape so tightly that it compresses the chest.

Waist

A woman's natural waist is usually the narrowest part of her torso, an inch or two above her belly button. To measure your waist, use a tailor's tape measure around the waist and measure the entire circumference.

Hip

Hips should be measured around the hips and the widest part of the hips, approximately eight inches below the waist. This is another girth measurement, which means you'll need to tape it around your body.

Inseam

To measure a woman's inseam, run the tape measure along her inner thigh from the lowest part of her groin to the bottom of her ankle. She should stand up and keep her legs straight while measuring.

Center Back Sleeve

To get a woman's "center of back sleeve" measurement, measure from the center of the top of her back (bottom of her neck) to the point of her shoulders. Then measure her wrist bones from the point of her shoulders. The sum of these two measurements is the center back sleeve length, which is sometimes used to size a shirt or jacket.

Torso

When shopping for women's swimwear, you may need to take torso measurements. This is a circumference measurement, which means you need to go around your entire torso from the upper shoulders to the groin. Place the end of the measuring tape on the top of the shoulder, where the shoulder meets the bottom of the neck. Run the tape from the front of the torso down the fullest part of the bust. Wrap it around the leg, all the way up to the starting point.

Congratulations! you are done! Once you've written down all your accurate body measurements, compare them to your favorite brand's size chart to find the right clothing size for you. Then you can buy women's clothing online!
